For the 2009-10 school year, all of our fellowship groups will be drawing from resources centered upon the biblical themes of hospitality, outreach, evangelism, and missional living. This is a unique season in the life of our church, as we want to be ready to seize the opportunities for reaching into the lives of our friends, neighbors, and co-workers across the city that a new church home will provide us. Books and leader guides will be provided for each group, and we will ask for donations from fellowship group participants to help offset costs.
All of our fellowship groups will read through and discuss Tim Keller’s book, The Reason for God, in the fall of 2009. This is a book that will help “whet the appetite” for evangelistic encounters as well as give our people gospel-centered, apologetic tools in which to draw from as they engage non-believers. The book comes with a study/discussion guide that is easily distributable to all group members (click here to download).
Course Content
• How could a loving God send people to Hell?
• Why does God allow suffering in the world?
• Why isn’t Christianity more inclusive?
• How can one religion be “right” and the others “wrong”?
• Why have so many wars been fought in the name of God?
These are just a few of the questions and doubts even ardent believers wrestle with today. As the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, Timothy Keller has compiled a list of the most frequently voiced “doubts” skeptics bring to his church as well as the most important reasons for faith. And in The Reason for God, he addresses each doubt and explains each reason.
Keller uses literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and reasoning to explain how faith in a Christian God is a soundly rational belief, held by thoughtful people of intellectual integrity with a deep compassion for those who truly want to know the truth.
